How We Work

Our Professional Painting Process From Estimate to Walkthrough

Every Nelson Painting project follows the same proven six-step process we have refined over three generations. No surprises, no shortcuts — just transparent communication and craftsmanship at every stage.

1

Your project starts with a personal visit from owner Marc Nelson. Marc walks your entire property with you — inside and out — discussing your goals, assessing every surface, and noting any repairs that need attention before paint goes on. This is not a quick glance from the driveway. Marc checks for peeling, cracking, wood rot, caulk failures, mildew, and moisture issues that could undermine a new paint job.

You will receive a detailed written proposal within 24 hours. The proposal breaks down every line item — preparation work, materials, labor, and timeline — so you know exactly what you are paying for. No hidden fees, no vague estimates. We answer every question before work begins.

Typical turnaround: same-week estimate appointments for most of Southeastern MA, with your written proposal delivered the next business day.

2

Choosing the right colors and sheens can feel overwhelming. We help you navigate the process with confidence. Marc and the team provide guidance on which colors complement your home's architecture, trim, and landscaping. We recommend specific sheens for each surface — flat for ceilings, eggshell or satin for walls, semi-gloss for trim and doors — so the finish both looks great and performs well.

For exterior projects, we apply test patches on your actual surfaces so you can see how colors look in natural daylight before committing. Once selections are confirmed, we coordinate scheduling around your calendar. Our goal is zero disruption to your daily routine.

We use premium Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams products exclusively. These paints provide superior coverage, color retention, and durability — which means your investment looks better and lasts longer than budget alternatives.

3

This is where Nelson Painting separates itself from every other painter. Preparation accounts for 60–70% of the time on every project, and it is the single biggest factor in how long your paint job lasts. Skipping prep is the number-one reason paint fails prematurely — and we never skip it.

Our preparation process includes:

Power washing and soft washing to remove dirt, mildew, algae, and sea salt buildup that prevents paint adhesion.

Scraping and sanding all loose, peeling, and flaking paint down to a sound surface.

Patching and repairing drywall, plaster, wood rot, nail holes, and caulk failures before any primer is applied.

Priming bare wood, patched areas, and stain-prone surfaces with the correct primer for maximum adhesion and stain blocking.

Masking and protecting floors, furniture, fixtures, hardware, landscaping, and any surfaces not being painted.

For homes built before 1978, we follow EPA Lead-Safe Certified Renovation (RRP) procedures. Our crews are trained to contain, remove, and dispose of lead-based paint safely, protecting your family and meeting all federal and Massachusetts regulations.

4

Every Nelson Painting project is completed by our own in-house crews — never subcontractors. That means the same team that has been trained in our standards and techniques is on your property from start to finish. You deal with one company, one team, and one standard of quality.

We follow the proper painting sequence for every room and every exterior surface: ceilings first, then trim and woodwork, then walls. This sequence prevents drips, ensures clean lines, and produces a factory-smooth finish. We apply a minimum of two coats on every surface — more where needed for color changes or demanding substrates.

Depending on the scope and surface, we use a combination of brush, roller, and spray application. Cabinets and fine trim get sprayed for a flawless, smooth finish. Walls get rolled and back-brushed for even coverage. Exteriors may be sprayed and back-rolled for efficiency and adhesion on textured surfaces.

All work uses premium Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams paints selected for each specific application. The right product on the right surface is what makes a paint job last 8–12 years instead of 3–5.

5

When the painting is done, the job is not over. Our cleanup process is just as thorough as our preparation. We remove all masking, drop cloths, tape, and protective coverings. All hardware — switch plates, outlet covers, door handles, and hinges — gets reinstalled precisely.

We clean every window, sill, and surface that may have collected dust during preparation and painting. Furniture gets moved back to its original position. Exterior landscaping and walkways are cleaned of any debris.

Every can of leftover paint gets labeled with the color name, sheen, and the room or surface it was used on, then left for your future touch-ups. Our goal is to leave your property cleaner than we found it — and our customers consistently tell us we achieve that.

6

Before we consider any project complete, Marc or the crew lead walks every painted surface with you. We check for coverage, consistency, clean edges, and overall finish quality. If anything does not meet your expectations — or ours — we address it on the spot. No punch lists that drag on for weeks. No chasing callbacks.

We stand behind every project we complete. Nelson Painting has maintained zero BBB complaints throughout our 65-year history, and that reputation is not something we take lightly. When we shake your hand at the end of a job, it means we are confident the work will last.

Our customers do not just hire us once. They call us back for every painting project because they know exactly what they are going to get — honest pricing, exceptional preparation, premium materials, and a result they are proud to show off. That is the Nelson Painting difference.

In-House Crews Only
