This is the question we answer more than any other in Freetown, and getting it wrong wastes a whole job.
Pressure-treated lumber arrives at the yard saturated. The preservative is forced into the wood under pressure in a water-based solution, and the board that reaches your property is carrying a great deal of moisture inside it. It looks like ordinary dry lumber and it is not.

The honest waiting period is not a fixed number of weeks, which is why the advice people find online is contradictory. It depends on how wet the lumber was, the season, the exposure, and whether the surface is horizontal or vertical. A deck built in a dry August on an open lot may be ready in a few weeks; the same deck built in a wet spring under tree cover can take several months.
The test is simple and it is the only one worth using. Sprinkle water on the surface. If it beads up and sits there, the wood is still full and it is not ready. If it soaks in within a minute or two, the pores are open and it will take a finish. Do that in a few different places, because one board is not the deck.
There is a second reason to wait that people underestimate. New pressure-treated lumber also has mill glaze and surface residue on it, and a light cleaning and light sanding before the first finish makes a substantial difference to how evenly it takes. Going straight from delivery to stain is how you get a blotchy first coat.
If you have already finished new lumber too soon and it is failing, that is fixable. It needs cleaning back, proper drying, and starting again, and we will tell you honestly how far back it has to go.
Deck, Fence & Playset Staining
Refinishing outdoor structures every three to five years keeps them structurally sound rather than merely presentable. Left alone, boards absorb water, cup, split, and eventually need replacing, which costs many times what maintaining them does.
We wash the surface, wait for it to reach the right moisture content, sand where the grain has raised, and replace any board past saving before staining. That waiting step applies to existing decks as much as new lumber: a deck washed on Saturday and stained on Sunday is a job that will fail.
