Every exterior colour fades. What varies enormously is how fast, and how evenly, and those are things you can decide rather than discover.
Fade is ultraviolet light breaking down the pigment in the film. That is why the south and west elevations always go first: they take the most hours of direct sun at the highest angle, and a wall facing north on the same house can still look close to new when the south wall has visibly shifted. Any contractor telling you a colour will hold identically on all four sides has not watched a house age.
Pigment quality is where the money actually goes in a premium exterior paint, and it is the part nobody explains. Cheaper paints use organic pigments that are bright, inexpensive, and comparatively poor at resisting ultraviolet. Better exteriors use inorganic pigments that hold colour far longer. That is why two paints that look identical on the day of application can look completely different in year four, and why the price difference is not marketing.
Colour choice itself matters as much as product. Deep, saturated reds, bright blues, and strong yellows rely most heavily on the pigments that fade fastest, so those are the colours that disappoint soonest on a sun-facing wall. Earth tones, greys, greens, and anything with a substantial white base hold far better because the pigments doing the work are more stable.
Dark colours bring a second problem beyond fade: heat. A dark wall in direct sun runs dramatically hotter than a light one, and that heat cycling stresses the film, the substrate, and every joint in the wall. On a south or west elevation a very dark colour is a maintenance decision rather than only a taste one, and you should make it knowing that.
None of this means you cannot have the colour you want. It means we will tell you honestly what it will look like in year five, and if that is not acceptable we will find something close that holds. That conversation costs nothing and it saves people from repainting early.
Exterior House Painting
Exterior work is roughly seventy percent preparation. We wash the envelope to remove chalking and mildew, scrape and sand every failing edge back to sound material, and prime bare wood before any finish coat goes on.
Swansea's exposure splits with the town. The shore at Ocean Grove and Touisset takes salt and wind off open water; the inland villages take unbroken sun on open farmland. Both are harder on colour than a sheltered suburban lot, for different reasons.

We are candid about what will not work. Thermofoil and some laminate faces do not hold a coating reliably, and telling you that before we quote is cheaper than discovering it after the deposit.
Deck & Railing Staining
Refinishing a deck every three to five years keeps it structurally sound rather than merely presentable. Left alone, boards absorb water, cup, split, and eventually need replacing.
We wash the surface, wait for it to reach the right moisture content, sand where the grain has raised, and replace any board past saving before staining. Waiting for the wood to genuinely dry is the step most often skipped and the single most common reason a finish fails in its first year.
Deck colour fades faster than anything else on a property, because a horizontal surface takes ultraviolet at close to a right angle for most of the day. That is why a deck stain that looked rich in May reads grey and thin by the second autumn, and it is entirely normal rather than a product failure.
Semi-transparent stains wear gradually rather than peeling, which matters on a surface you will refresh every few years. Choosing a tone that fades gracefully rather than one that shifts colour as it thins makes the maintenance cycle much less noticeable.
Power Washing & Soft Washing
Washing is the cheapest maintenance there is and the most commonly skipped. Removing mildew, salt, and grime before it becomes established extends the life of a coating by years.
It also extends the life of the colour. A chalked, dirty surface reads dull and faded well before the pigment has actually gone, and a proper wash frequently brings a house back much closer to its original colour than owners expect.
Vinyl and aluminium siding, roof shingles, and older wood clapboard need soft washing: low pressure with a solution that kills mildew at the root rather than blasting the surface layer off. High pressure on siding forces water behind the panels.
On the shore an annual wash is a minimum, with water-facing elevations rinsed again partway through the season.
Carpentry & Wood Repair
Paint does not fix rot. When we find soft trim, failing sills, or damaged clapboard during prep, we repair or replace it before painting rather than coating over the problem.

The failure map splits with the town. On the shore: water-side sills, corner board bottoms, deck ledgers, and corroding fasteners. Inland: south and west trim degraded by sun as much as water, fascia behind overflowing gutters, and anything in contact with grade.

Floors, furniture, landscaping, fixtures, and hardware are covered and protected before painting starts.

Clean, protected work areas are a standard rather than a courtesy, and it is how we avoid the small damages that turn a good job into a dispute.

We do not paint an elevation in direct sun, both because it causes blistering and because a film that skins over too fast does not develop the durability the product is capable of.

We walk the finished work with you, address anything you flag, and clean the site completely before leaving. Touch-up paint is labelled and left with you, with the exact product and colour recorded.

That record matters more than people expect. A touch-up years later with a different batch or a different product will not match a wall that has aged, and having the specification written down is what makes a small repair invisible.
