It is pushed sideways and upward into joints, under laps, behind trim, and into every gap the detailing did not anticipate, because a wall's water shedding was designed for gravity.
That is why an exposed elevation fails in places a sheltered one never does: the underside of a sill, the top edge of a trim board, the back of a lap joint, the gap where a corner board meets siding. Those places get wet on an open site and stay wet, and no coating survives a substrate that is repeatedly saturated from behind.
So on the exposed end the work is as much about detailing as about coating. We caulk the joints that actually move with a sealant that stays flexible, we make sure the joints that must drain are left open rather than sealed shut, and we back-prime replacement trim so it is protected on the face nobody sees.
That distinction between joints that should be sealed and joints that must drain is where a lot of well-meant work goes wrong. Caulking a drainage path closed traps water in the wall, and on a wind-exposed elevation there is a great deal of water to trap.
It also explains why the same house can need attention on one elevation every five years and the other every ten. We assess and price elevations separately rather than treating the house as one surface.
Exterior House Painting
Exterior work is roughly seventy percent preparation. We wash the envelope to remove salt, chalking, and mildew, scrape and sand every failing edge back to sound material, and prime bare wood before any finish coat goes on.
On the exposed end we specify coastal-grade systems and treat salt removal as non-negotiable. Coating over salt residue is a leading cause of premature failure on this shore, and on an open site the salt reaches further inland than people expect.
Fasteners fail early on exposed elevations. Nail heads and any exposed steel rust in this air and bleed through a finish coat within months, so we set and spot-prime them properly rather than painting over them.
Inland at North Westport and Head of Westport the driver changes: open farmland means unbroken sun and wind on the south and west walls, which fade and chalk early, while shaded and low-lying areas hold damp and grow mildew.
Where a budget will not stretch to the whole house, we phase by condition rather than by which elevation faces the road.
Interior Wall & Ceiling Painting

An annual soft wash is the minimum on the shore, with the windward elevations rinsed again partway through the season.
Carpentry & Wood Repair
Paint does not fix rot, and on a wind-exposed elevation rot arrives sooner and in specific places.
Our crews carry carpentry capability, so a rotted sill found on Tuesday does not become a second contractor, a second schedule, and a second mobilisation charge. On a rural property that matters more than usual, because getting a second trade out for half a day is genuinely harder here.

Clean, protected work areas are a standard rather than a courtesy, and it is how we avoid the small damages that turn a good job into a dispute.

On an open site we watch wind as closely as temperature, because it changes how fast a coating skins over and can ruin a finish that would have been fine in still air. On the shore we watch fog and dew point too.

We walk the finished work with you, address anything you flag, and clean the site completely before leaving. Touch-up paint is labelled and left with you.
